Ch. 49.4 — All the terrible things that Mary had suffered through the years rushed into her mind. If she went back into the tunnels with this troll, she would die. And what would they do to the queen? Her heart hammered and her insides turned to jelly as she thought of her new friend experiencing similar trials. This beautiful woman with the soft hands and kind heart wouldn’t last long.
Mary knew it was hopeless, but she had to try. She took a deep breath, stood in front of the queen, and raised her dagger.
Bump smiled, exposing jagged teeth. “You’ve developed an attitude. I’m going to enjoy doing something about that.” He lumbered forward.
An intense hatred for this monster filled her. Mary screamed and ran at him.
If he hadn’t been so surprised, he wouldn’t have paused to laugh, and Bump might have killed them both. Instead, Mary plunged the dagger into his stomach.
Bump stood still, shock on his face. Then he toppled backwards and was still. Mary stabbed him over and over, screaming and crying.
Then a hand seized hers and twisted the dagger away. It tumbled to the ground. Queen Natalie gathered the sobbing girl and held her.
“It’s over. It’s over now. You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
After a long while, Mary wiped off her face and stepped back. She glanced down, then picked up the dagger and stared at it, puzzled. “It shouldn’t have killed him, you know.”
The queen nodded. “I know. However, this blade is blue: it’s been dipped in dragon’s blood — the deadliest poison there is. This is Ezra’s doing.”
For a moment all Mary could do was stare at the dagger. She took a shaky breath. “I guess I’ll just have to be careful who I stab.” Then, taking great care not to touch the blade, Mary wiped it off in the grass and put it back in its sheath.
She looked up to see the queen staring off in the distance with a sad expression on her lovely face.
“What is it?”
“The circle is complete.”
“What do you mean?”
The queen just shook her head. “I’ll explain later. Right now we need to find poor Mr. Dumfries.”
