Ch. 43.5 – Tired and discouraged, Janine went back to Ezra’s room and sat down beside him. She took his ice-cold hand in hers. His face was very pale, but he was still breathing. Janine added another quilt and tucked it around him.
There was nothing left to do. Ezra was going to die.
She gazed at the face that had become so beloved to her. “Oh, Ezra. If only you could wake up. I need you.”
Janine hardly knew what she was saying. She was just babbling, and tears were running down her face so fast she couldn’t see. She knew that either way, this was the end.
She stood up. “Goodbye, dear Ezra.”
As she leaned over the prince, her tears ran down her nose and dropped onto Ezra’s forehead. Then Janine kissed him on the lips.
To her astonishment, Ezra opened his eyes.
