Ch. 39.4 – While Paul shouted outside the front door, Eli threw the red cloak over his clothes and drew the hood over his face. Then he sat on the stool by the bed. As he stared at the man in the bed, Eli remembered where he’d seen him before.
“You’re MacQuire, the werewolf. You were at my little brother’s name day celebration.”
The man snarled. “If you hurt my wife, I swear I will rip you apart.”
Eli’s heart pounded, but he spoke soothingly. “Hey, easy now, I only want to help. What’s wrong with you?”
After a moment MacQuire answered him. “I’m stuck. It’s the full moon, and I can’t shift. If it doesn’t happen soon…” He growled again and then lay back against the pillow, panting. “He’s planning to kill Connie. She’s outsmarted him too many times.” MaQuire looked at Eli with a desperate expression. “Will you help us?”
“I’ll try.” Eli thought hard. Then an idea came to him. “Felix.”
The cat appeared at his side. “You rang?”
“I need Miracle Mix.”
“So does the whole kingdom.”
“But I’m betting that you know where it’s hidden.”
The cat’s ears went back. “I almost got killed last time I snuck in there. I can’t go back. Sorry, but no can do. No way. No how.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
The cat hissed. “Won’t.”
“Please, Felix. These people need our help. We’re all in terrible danger.” Eli thought some more. “How about a life-time supply of strawberry tarts? I bet Connie is a fabulous cook.”
“She is,” MacQuire said.
The cat perked up. “I am going to live a very long time.”
“Done,” said Connie, who had walked into the bedroom again.
The cat grinned. “Lady, you have yourself a deal.” He disappeared.
