Jay B. R. Wokky Ch. 36.8 — Queen Natalie Takes Charge

CH. 36.8 — The king panted, red-faced from pain. “Guards,” he whispered. “Fetch Ezra back to the castle immediately.”
“No.” Queen Natalie gathered her courage as she wiped away her tears and got to her feet. Her worst fears had come to pass, and her strong, capable – if sometimes stubborn and close-minded – husband was in no shape to deal with the current crisis. Just like she had since the king had collapsed, Queen Natalie would have to take the reins and direct the affairs of the country.
She took a deep breath. “Ezra will stay where he is. He’s too weak to move, and the roads are terrible.”
The king spluttered, but she put her hand on his chest and pushed him back against his pillow. “Let me handle things, my dear. You need to rest.”
King Francis looked at her with pleading eyes. Sweat beaded his forehead.
Queen Natalie stood straight and addressed the servants. “Now, then, according to the curse, Prince Ezra can only be awakened by a kiss from a fair maiden.”
She went on to explain that the letter was from Jay B. R. Wokky, Sir Dragon Extraordinaire and Guardian of the Eastern Mountains, who stated that all girls intending to kiss the prince should come to the dragon’s cave. The dragon must be guaranteed safety — because after all, Jay had rescued Prince Ezra, and he had been caring for him and keeping him safe all this time.
“Send out announcements throughout Nelsonia and to all the neighboring kingdoms. All beautiful maidens will assemble here at the castle. Simons, you will organize them into groups of ten and have guards take them up into the mountains. Have their guardians sign a document that says they understand that the mountains and woods are dangerous, and we are not responsible for any accidents or deaths that occur.”
Queen Natalie looked out the window. Dawn revealed a dreary vista. The skeletons of trees poked out from a snow-covered landscape. The houses of the town huddled together beneath their sooty blankets. She had never felt so weary.
