Jay B. R. Wokky Ch 27 — Fritter is Astonished

CH. 27 — Fritter squawked.
Jay and Janine looked up from their breakfast of just-baked waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Jay held a giant teacup in his claws, but he paused and looked over at Fritter.
The gnome stared at the newspaper. His eyes were round, his expression astonished.
“What is it, Fritter?” asked Janine.
Fritter looked up at the dragon. “Sire, did you know that you are dead?”
“Really?”
Fritter tapped the newspaper. “According to this report, the princes of Nelsonia bravely battled the dragon, Jay B. R. Wokky, and defeated him. They brought his severed head back to the city and burned it with great ceremony, accompanied by cheering from the crowds. Crown Prince Matthew is quoted as saying, “He was a manxiom foe, and we battled for hours. The ground shook. Birds and animals for miles around fled the terrible scene, but we prevailed in the end. I am sorry to report that the fair princess which the dragon held captive was already dead when we arrived. However, our brother Ezra is avenged, and the people no longer need to fear for their lives, or for the lives of their daughters, flocks, and herds. ”
Anger burned in Janine. “Those rotten liars. First they snub me, then they hurt my Jubby, and then they lie about their cowardice. I should go down there and give them a piece of my mind.” She stood up from the table.
Jay reached over and pushed her back down in her chair. “Sit down and eat your breakfast.”
To Janine’s surprise, he was laughing.
“I don’t understand.”
“Don’t you see? Those idiot princes have given us just what we wanted. Everyone thinks I’m dead, and that there is no fair maiden being held captive. Therefore they won’t keep coming up here and bothering us. We’ll have a wonderful, peaceful winter.”
After a moment, Janine began to smile. “Well, when you put it that way…”
