Selkies are mythological creatures found in Irish, Scottish, Faroese and Icelandic folklore. They live as seals in the sea, but shed their skin and live as humans on land. They can be coerced into relationships with humans if someone steals and hides their sealskin. If they find their sealskin, they will go back to the sea. Most relationships between Selkies and humans end in tragedy.
The great thing about fiction is that you can take the basic stories that have been passed down, and create something based on them, but with new, fresh dimensions. Stephenie Meyer did this with her vampires. My Selkies are somewhat different than the norm.
