If you’re looking for a fun YA book, try Sucks To Be Me, by Kimberly Pauley. This is the story of Mina Hamilton, whose vampire parents have been hiding her existence from the vampire authorities. But when they find out about Mina, they fine her parents and force her to take a class so that she can make an informed decision to become a vampire… or not. Her choice is between 1) a very, very long undead life with her parents and other vampire friends while having to change identities, fake deaths, and leave everyone behind, or 2) staying mortal, having all her memories wiped, and losing her parents. Sounds easy, right? The biggest problem: Mina can’t leave her best friend behind. Meanwhile, the normal stresses and crushes of a high school teenage girl go on. I enjoyed Mina’s lighthearted, slightly snarky, and always humorous voice. The sequel, Still Sucks to Be Me, tells of Mina’s ongoing adventures. I enjoyed this story. It was just what I needed on a cold winter’s night.
