Halloween

Tomorrow is Halloween.  I’m not into blood and gore, hauntings, possessions, and hatchet murders.  I don’t do scary.  (Although I do indulge in the occasional vampire and werewolf story.)  But I do like to dress up and pretend, to see all the kids’ costumes, hand out candy, and carve pumpkins.  I enjoy watching "It's the… Continue reading Halloween

My Favorite Bears

Teddy bears hold a special place in my heart.  I still have my first bear, now quite blind and scruffy in his old age.  But he's a kind, wise grandfatherly bear who presides over my large assortment of stuffed animals.  My youngest sister has an even larger collection.  We both have a tendency to give… Continue reading My Favorite Bears

The Time Between

I know I keep saying that I just read this great book, but this one really does top the list.  The Time Between, by Karen White, is incredibly beautiful and deeply moving.  With the lush scenery of Edisto Island and the gradual reveal of the layers of each character, I was right there, hurting and… Continue reading The Time Between

The Real Boy

I wasn’t planning on buying another book. After all, I have six books piled on my desk that need reviews, and another twenty books on my night stand that want to be read. But as I was perusing my favorite book review websites, I found The Real Boy. The cover and review looked interesting, so… Continue reading The Real Boy

The Perfect Dog

We had five small children when my husband agreed that it was time to get a dog.  I immediately went to the library and began to research breeds.  My ideal dog had to be intelligent, easy to train, medium energy level, friendly, and most important, good with children.  After hours of reading, jotting notes, and… Continue reading The Perfect Dog

Graphic Novels

As a child I enjoyed comic books as well as regular novels.  One day while at Girl Scout Brownies, while all the other kids were doing a craft, I found a comic book on a shelf, and soon I was lost in the story of Elfquest.  When Brownies was over, I still hadn't done the… Continue reading Graphic Novels

Autumn Beauty

Yesterday I helped with another field trip out at the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve.  As we stood on top of the Tower and looked out over the marsh, I was impressed with how much the wetlands have changed, and how each season brings its own beauty.  Just a few short weeks ago, the marsh… Continue reading Autumn Beauty

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there!  The second Monday in October was officially designated as Canadian Thanksgiving in 1957, a day to give thanks “for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”  Before that it was observed on different dates each year.  Although the Native Americans were celebrating the fall harvest… Continue reading Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

Warbreaker

I stayed up really late last night to finish Warbreaker, by Brandon Sanderson.  This book was incredible!  If you’ve read any of his other books, you know that Brandon’s world building is amazingly rich and complex.  He does this by weaving the details of his carefully constructed fantasy world into the story, gradually revealing a… Continue reading Warbreaker

Space, the Final Frontier

This past weekend we went to see Gravity.  I really enjoyed the movie, and Sandra Bullock did an amazing job.  The movie reminded me of a family vacation to the Cape Kennedy Space Center where we saw the relics of the space program.  I was amazed at how flimsy everything looked.  We sent them out… Continue reading Space, the Final Frontier
